19.-20.05.2026 GICON did it again - SILVER SPONSOR of the 12th and final International Conference on Renewable Energy Gas Technology, REGATEC 2026, in LUND / SWE

9.-11.12.2025 - Project presentation at BIOGAS Convention & Trade Fair in Nürnberg

8./9.09.2025 - Project presentation at 9th FNR/KTBL-Congress "Biogas in agriculture - current status and prospects"

This year, the traditional FNR/KTBL Congress was held at the University of Hohenheim (Stuttgart). The WeMetBio2 project was presented as part of the poster presentation. In addition to the advantages of biological methanisation and the advanced stage of the current planning and implementation of the demonstration plant, the legislators were also addressed. The aim must be to improve the regulatory framework of legislation, such as incentive funding or remuneration for medium and long-term storage of renewable energies (in this case e-methane) and the possibility of coupling different material flows.

12.06.2025 9. North German biogas-sector meeting

Our project team had its own stand at the biogas sector meeting in Rendsburg. With two roll-ups – one for the WeMetBio2 project and one of the University of Applied Sciences Flensburg – we were able to give numerous visitors an insight into our work and research in the field of biological methanisation.

There was considerable interest in the project, with its practical focus and relevance to sustainable energy supply receiving particularly positive feedback. In addition to presenting the project, we took the opportunity to introduce the new bachelor’s degree programme in Green Engineering – Environmental and Process Engineering at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. This also attracted a great deal of interest, especially from young visitors who are enthusiastic about sustainable and future-oriented studies.

The day not only offered valuable professional exchange with players in the biogas sector, but also a great platform for combining research, teaching and practice. We are delighted with the positive feedback and the exciting discussions!

11.06.2025 - visit by biogas association of Austria

Today, we were pleased to welcome the Austrian Biogas Association to University of Applied Sciences Flensburg. During a joint meeting, we presented our ‘WeMetBio2’ project and provided an insight into our research work on biological methanisation.

Following the project presentation, we gave our guests a tour of selected laboratories at the university. This led to interesting discussions about technical details, common challenges and possible prospects for the future.

The visit was rounded off with a cosy get-together in the hop garden – with coffee, sunshine and stimulating discussions about cross-border cooperation in the field of renewable energies.

A successful day with international exchange and lots of new ideas for our project!

20.-21.05.2025 - regatec 2025

For the third time, GICON® and Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg were jointly represented at Regatec2025 – 11th International Conference on Renewable Energy Gas Technology. This renowned symposium takes place annually at a different location in Europe. This year, GICON® Managing Director Dr. Hagen Hilse and project leader Dr. Marko Burkhardt were in Weimar. Oliver Horn (M.Sc.) from Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg took part in the conference with a poster presentation to introduce the joint WeMetBio2 project. In the symposium on methanisation, Dr Hilse spoke on the topic: “𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘌𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘉𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘪𝘵𝘦 -𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴”

With a variety of interesting presentations, posters and technical discussions on current challenges and achievements in the field of technology development, the conference was an excellent opportunity for project presentations and international exchange.

Thank you to the team of Dr Jörgen Held (Baltic Energy Innovation Centre) and Dr Frank Schollwin (Institue for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy) for the excellent organisation!

05.03.2025 - Special exhibition: ‘Hydrogen with an aHa-effect’ with lecture series

Our project team took part in the special exhibition ‘Hydrogen with an aHa-effect’ at Phänomenta Flensburg, where we gained exciting insights into the world of hydrogen. We found the practical experience particularly interesting: at various stands, schoolchildren carried out impressive experiments and explained the scientific background to us. It was inspiring to see how enthusiastically they presented their experiments.

A particular highlight later on was the presentation given as part of the lecture series by our project member Dr.-Ing. habil. Marko Burkhardt, who introduced the topic of biological methanisation as a component of decentralised power-to-gas technology. His remarks impressively demonstrated the potential of this technology and sparked exciting discussions.

The event offered a great mix of theory and practice and gave us many new ideas. With these impressions, we are motivated to move on to the next project phases!

05.03.2025 - Project meeting & Public relacion meeting: The kick-off event

Beside our kick-off meeting there was an interesting  item on the agenda. In addition to discussing the next steps in our project, we also had the opportunity to present our work to the public. The Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitungsverlag and FLENSBORG AVIS were on site to report on our project.

In constructive discussions, we worked out ways to optimise the project and set priorities for the coming weeks. At the same time, we were able to give journalists exciting insights into our work and explain the significance of our project.

The combination of strategic planning and media attention has brought us further forward. With fresh motivation and concrete tasks, we are now entering the next phase!
